TMJ Treatment - Providing Thousand Oaks-Area Patients with Outstanding Results – Pain Relief through Neuromuscular Dentistry

Do you suffer from regular headaches, neck pain, or soreness in your jaw? Have you turned to countless doctors and specialists without experiencing any improvement? Have you been told that nobody can figure out where your pain is coming from? You may be suffering from a relatively common condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder. At his office in Agoura Hills near Westlake Village, Calabasas, Malibu, and Thousand Oaks, Dr. Jonathan Ziv is trained to diagnose TMJ and offer treatment to eliminate the condition.

What is TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. This is the joint connecting the lower jaw to the upper jaw. Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD, or TMJ, is a chronic degenerative disorder that may take years to develop. It is a progressive condition, and if left untreated can cause severe damage to the teeth. People who suffer from TMJ have a structural imbalance, caused by a misaligned bite.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms

TMJ can cause the following and other symptoms:

* Migraines
* Clicking and popping noises
* Locked Jaw
* Facial pain
* Dizziness
* Neck pain
* Vertigo
* Nausea
* Tinnitus

Other symptoms of TMJ are head and facial pain, earaches or stuffiness in ears, numbness in fingers and arms, limited movement or locking of jaw, and pain behind the eyes. Patients suffering from these symptoms should contact our office serving the Thousand Oaks area for TMJ treatment as soon as possible.

Ringing in the ears, or tinnitus, is a symptom of TMJ that is commonly misdiagnosed but, with proper treatment, can be relieved. The complex network of nerves and muscles throughout the head, including the ears, can be affected when the bite is improperly aligned.  If you experience tinnitus it may be due to an unstable or misaligned bite. If that is the case, Dr. Ziv can treat the source of the problem, stabilizing and realigning the bite so that the entire jaw area works in harmony.

By the time many of our patients arrive in our office, they have already been seen by chiropractors, neurologists, and ear and nose specialists—without substantial relief of symptoms. They may even have been referred to a psychiatrist because they've been told that "it's all in your mind," or have had thoughts of suicide.

Our experience has been that otherwise unexplained and chronic head, neck, and facial pain is often symptomatic of TMJ disorder. This pain can be eliminated even for those who have been requiring injectable painkillers just to function at a minimal level.

TMJ Treatment Options

Many people go through years of debilitating headaches and migraines, requiring stronger and stronger medication as their pain worsens. Some of these people even consider surgery, not realizing that their problems have a treatable cause—a worn-down or misaligned bite.

Using advanced technical equipment at our Los Angeles area office, Dr. Ziv's TMJ treatment involves first locating the correct jaw position. With the use of bio-electronic instruments and other advanced dental technology, he measures the dynamics of the jaw's opening and closing in three dimensions, and gauges the activity of key muscles that control the jaw. This procedure reveals whether the jaw is in or near its optimal position, and whether the occlusion (how your teeth come together) should be changed to relieve your pain. If you or someone you know suffers from head or neck pain, there is hope. Make an appointment for a noninvasive test and begin the path toward relief from severe pain.
