TMJ Treatment/Neuromuscular Dentistry

What is TMJ?

Millions of Americans suffer from regular headaches, migraines,  neck pain, and soreness of the jaw due to temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ disorder or TMD. Although many doctors and specialists can’t always pinpoint TMJ, it is a relatively common condition.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. This is the joint connecting the lower jaw to the upper jaw. TMJ disorder, or TMD,  is a chronic, often degenerative disorder that may take years to develop, or even start causing pain unexpectedly. It is a progressive condition which left untreated, can cause severe damage to the teeth or to the temporomandibular soft and hard tissues including bone, ligaments, fibrous tissue, and cartilage. People in the Greater Conejo Valley or Ventura County area who suffer from TMJ disorder often have a structural imbalance caused by a misaligned bite leading to muscle inflammation, spasm, incoordination, weakness, and pain.

TMJ Treatment Options/Neuromuscular Dentistry

Many people in the Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village area endure years of debilitating headaches and migraines, sometimes requiring serious pain medications. Some of these people even consider surgery, not realizing that their problems have a treatable cause: a worn-down or misaligned bite causing a neuromuscular imbalance.

Using advanced neuromuscular dental  technical equipment in our office, Dr. Ziv’s TMJ treatment involves first locating the correct jaw position. With the use of bio-electronic instruments and other advanced neuromuscular dental technology, he measures the dynamics of the jaw’s opening and closing in three dimensions, and gauges the activity of key muscles that control the jaw.

This procedure reveals whether the jaw is in or near its optimal position, and whether the occlusion (how your teeth come together) might be changed to relax your facial and masticatory muscles to help relieve your pain.

Non-surgical, reversible, non-invasive means are utilized by Dr. Ziv to effect a change in your occlusion to diagnose whether the resultant relaxation of the head and neck muscles relieves your symptoms. In the vast majority of hundreds of cases treated by Dr. Ziv the chronic pain or dysfunctional symptoms of TMJ and TMD were either vastly improved or eliminated entirely by achieving the correct bite or occlusion and the resultant relaxation and return to a normal resting status of the facial and jaw muscles.

If you or someone you know in the Westlake, Thousand Oaks, or Agoura Hills areas suffers from head or neck pain, there is hope! Make an appointment for a noninvasive test and begin the path toward relief from severe pain.
